On November 17, 2011, Microsoft Philippines and the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) held a conference to support use of genuine softwares. Nothing is wrong with their initiative but their explanation against the use of pirated software is dubious.

Here are Microsoft's arguments from an article written in Inquirer.net:

One out of four pirated softwares became infected with viruses upon installation, the study said.

Given a proper pirated copy of a software, no virus would magically appear. Computer viruses are man-made and are intentionally placed by people. Hackers are the main cause of viruses, not the pirated software.

When compared to computers with pirated software, computers with genuine software performed faster during boot-up, in opening documents, opening programs, and loading popular internet pages that were text and image-heavy.

Given that the pirated software and the genuine one have the same version and updates, there should be no difference. Saying that pirated softwares automatically perform slower is just bullshit.

The power consumption of computers with genuine software was found to be much lower compared to computers with pirated software, leading to longer battery life and energy savings.

This is another stupid reason. Similar to the previous explanation. 2 exact versions of the same software, pirated or not, should have no difference in performance.

Microsoft presented their arguments incorrectly. The most common difference between a pirated and genuine software is how easy you can get updates from the developer.

Take Windows for example: A pirated and genuine version of Windows 7 Ultimate without any form of updates have no difference. The advantage of the genuine copy is being able to connect to Mircrosoft's server easily and download updates such as service packs. These updates could then affect system performance of both the software and hardware.

To Microsoft PH - make a better explanation next time. You just gave people who are knowledgeable about softwares a good laugh.
